Weathering fittings wire work
Wire works, whisks, breadcrumbs and other things were made both by tramps and wire factories. In the Gnosjö parish in Småland, wire work was already being produced at the end of the 18th century. In the beginning it was a sideline for farmers and crofters, but towards the end of the 19th century wire work was also done by some metal factories.
The tramps' "wire jacket" was made of iron wire, sometimes tinned, which was bought in the hardware store or from wire draggers. The work tool, a pair of pliers, was easy to carry in your pocket. Whisks, window hooks, pot racks and iron feet were sold or exchanged for food or a night's lodging. More artfully designed bread baskets and candlesticks could sometimes be decorated with wool yarn in cheerful colors.
Set-up hook in stable wire work. Makes it possible to set up a window from »slightly ajar« to half-open. Old model from Torsåker, Gästrikland.
