Splash painting is an old decorative painting technique that was used to add life and variety to wall surfaces – often to hide unevenness in the substrate. Instead of rolling or brushing on the paint, it is splashed using a broom or whisk, preferably made of birch bark or blueberry bark. The result is a beautiful, vibrant and irregular pattern.
Egg oil tempera is particularly suitable for splash painting because it is fluid, dries slowly and gives a soft matte appearance.
Here's how you do it
Follow Carin in the video below as she talks about and shows how it's done:
In the video, a birch resin paintbrush is used that has been cut to create irregular splashes. Carin starts with a darker color and finishes with a light one, which makes the surface more vibrant. She also tries using blueberry resin for the first time and shows how the result is affected by distance, angle and technique.
Customer example
Here, Ingela has splash-painted the walls in the kitchen with three colors in egg oil tempera. She used Snövit as a base, together with 6-690 yellow and 2-880 blue as splash colors. The wall color is an off-white gray color, 0-9863. The result was a vibrant expression that also blends in nicely with the rest of the room.
"We are so happy. It turned out so nicely and the paint had the perfect consistency for sprinkling with birch whisk. It also covered the wallpaper well." — Ingela Gustén
